Four demonstration (demo) tracks purported to be songs from Kelly Clarkson’s upcoming album have been leaked (or stolen, depending on what you believe) and released online.
Being an online music retailer, we of course do not approve of online file sharing (wagging finger in a very disapproving way and not winking at all). But once something is out there and being talked about, it’s a little difficult to put the genie back in the bottle and pretend it didn’t happen.
The official story of how these tracks made their way onto the internet (someone hacking their way into a computer which stored the demos, according to Clarkson band mate and co-writer Aben Eubanks) sounds a little fishy in my book.
More realistic is the idea that the tracks were released as a public relations move in light of My December’s poor performance relative to the smash Breakaway. A little indication to fans and critics that Clarkson will be returning to recording Clive Davis approved pop after a one album slightly self-indulgent detour.
Of course, they could very well have been stolen in the way reported by Eubanks. Folks who have posted links to the tracks say they’ve been contacted and asked to remove the links by individuals claiming to represent Clarkson.
In any event, word is Clarkson will release a new CD by the end of 2008.
