Fans of ousted American Idol contestant Michael Johns flooded the Idol message boards to spin conspiracy theories and complain about the cruel way Johns was dismissed from the competition following his surprise elimination last night.
In what could be [host Ryan] Seacrest’s cruelest tease ever on American Idol, he said, “That means Michael has the lowest number of votes this week. Now, last year during Idol Gives Back, we didn’t eliminate anybody at this stage of the competition.”
After the camera cut in on the face of a surprised Michael Johns turning to give Seacrest a hopeful look, Seacrest continued, “Tonight, we’re going to say goodbye to Michael Johns.” Many American Idol fans immediately turned to the American Idol message boards to express both their surprise over Michael Johns elimination and their anger over the way Seacrest delivered the results.
While I’m sure the Idol producers are quaking at the threats to stop watching the show posted by Johns’ outraged fans, I thought it was actually kind of funny. In a results show punctuated by even more depressing video packages of poverty and desperation (guess they couldn’t fit all the misery into the previous night’s 2 3/4 hours), I’m glad they did something to acknowledge that Idol is an entertainment show and actually entertain me.
As with any shocking elimination on American Idol, there are plenty of cries of conspiracy and demands for a recount. Conspiracy theories range from fans not voting because they didn’t think there would be an elimination during Idol Gives Back week to American Idol producers scripting the outcome to boost ratings with a shocker elimination.
Grow up. He was fine up to a point Tuesday night. But when you’re not Steven Tyler and you try to scream like Steven Tyler does at the end of Dream On (video below), you deserve whatever you get. I’m not even going to get into the weird ascot-like contraption around his neck. Put it all together, and it’s bye-bye.
