2 StarsDisappointing at best

My initial experience with this marvelous opera was the original vinyl recording. It was excellent throughout. This rendition, which I bought mostly due to pricing, was very disappointing to me. There was a sense of forced performance, an apparent attempt to "out-do" the original cast, and too much energy used to become "creative" with the original performance and vinyl recording. I agree with one reviewer who lauds the work of Claire Moore (Mary Magdalene), a key figure in the life of Christ, for purity of sound and depth of vocal quality. However, I stop short of saying she is better than the original cast person.
In fact, I'm returning this recording without regard for reimbursement in favor of spending a few bucks more for the original CD recording of JCS.
Respectfully,

5 StarsExcellent version of a genius musical

Of all the versions I've heard of A.L.W. musical, this one I believe is the best for two reasons: the orchestration and the voices are superior. Of the cast, I'd say Jesus, Pilate, Mary, Caiaphus, and Simon are the best in voice and Judas, I hate to say it, was horrible. He sounds like he's screaming and struggling through his range. The better Judas was Carl Andersen in the 1973 movie version.

5 StarsThe Best Version In My Opinion......

I have been to see the play. I own the original cast remastered version CD from the early 70's and I own this 20th Anniversary London Cast recording version CD. I was an avid fan of JCSS from the beginning. After listening to the different versions so many times my CD player (record player in the old days) is totally worn out. Without going into details I find that this 20th Anniversary version is the one I enjoy most and the one I take out to play when I am in the mood to listen to JCSS. The original version is also great. I recommend owning both... but if I owned just one this would be the one. Overall this one seems to have more emotion in the voices and the more modern recordiong adds to the quality of the sound over the early 70's recording. Usually I like the original versions of most everything but in this case the more modern recording makes the difference and is the most enjoyable to listen to. Both cast versions are fantastic.

3 StarsNot Highly Recommened.

"Jesus Christ Superstar: The 20th Anniversary London Cast Recording" leaves something to be desired.

Paul Nicholas' voice hasn't aged as well as other Seniors of Nazareth. He sounds perpetually short of breath and is weak on the roles demanding high notes. Likewise Keith Burns in the equally vocally taxing role of Judas Iscariot. Burns throws his voice around, inhaling sharply and occasionally wheezing. Neither seem to be in particular control of their instruments and it makes for a somewhat unlistenable dynamic on duets like "The Last Supper".

Victor Spinetti's take on "King Herod's Song" is as old as the hills. Takes like this are the reason the self indulgent ragtime interpretation needs to be put to rest.

Gary Martin delivers a rather traditional Caiaphas, recalling Bob Bingham, while Bogdan Kominowski's Annas is a clear take off from Brain Keith.

The orchestrations are polished with occasional bursts of creativity and freshness, but there isn't too much here we haven't heard before.

If you really dig the show (one of my favorites) i'd recommend scooping this album up - there isn't really a definitive JCS recording out there. They all have their highs and lows. That's why, as any completest would tell you, it's best to get as many versions as you can and let the mixing and matching begin!

didn't realize that the movie soundtrack differed from the Live production version. This isn't bad, but I prefer the singers in the movie version.
