| In the beginning… is where my story begins so it’s the perfect place to start. The Jesus Christ Superstar album was my first cover that had major notoriety and such huge global success right from the start. The only other album cover that I had done before Superstar was part of a promotion that I created for International Paper Corporation, which led me to creating two of the most iconic images in Rock N’ Roll history, but that’s a whole other story. Toward the end of 1969 I was a designer at Carloni Advertising in Manhattan my first gig in the “Big Apple”, after graduating from California College of Arts & Crafts, in Oakland CA. One of my first assignments was to create a campaign and all the graphics for International Paper Company’s National Sales Meeting, introducing all their new paper stocks for 1970. I created an Off-Broadway musical presentation fashioned after the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. complete with 10 original songs, skits and a chorus line of beautiful dancing girls. Our production was at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. It was called “Dolls Alive.” The promotion I created had an element to it that was an octagon album cover and record. They had recorded the production songs and pressed an album as a take home memento of the show. The campaign received a lot of notoriety and was displayed in the Union Carbine Building uptown for a few months. During that time a very aggressive “Graphic Design Headhunter” whose office was in the building, saw the campaign, got my name, and reached out to me. |
