Description
Typically minimalist, Anton Webern summed up each of Zemlinsky s four quartets with single word descriptions. Aufbruch (departure) corresponded to No.1 and getting out from under Brahms shadow. Wende (the turning point) described No.2, an Expressionistic work of Mahlerian proportions. His choice for No.3 was Reduktion with its burlesque, sardonic wit, and Maskenspiel (mask game) described No.4, a lyric suite in homage to Alban Berg. On this SACD from Praga, the Zemlinsky Quartet offers definitive readings of the second and fourth quartets.
